The $489.4bn Canada Pension Plan Investment
Board has appointed Ben Meng, Franklin Resources Executive and former CalPERS
CIO, to head the active strategies at the plan.

In the new role, Meng will report to Ed
Cass, the pension plan’s first dedicated investment chief.

Meng, as the head of investment portfolio
management, will spearhead the teams’ allocations to stock plays, credit,
private equity, infrastructure and other strategies, according to a report by Bloomberg. This makes up more than half of CPPIB’s assets.

Meng has spent multiple years tackling some
of the world’s biggest and complex institutions.

Prior to joining the Canadian plan, Meng
was the executive vice president and chairman of Asia-Pacific at Franklin
Templeton, where he was heading the strategy in the region.
His past roles also includes serving as deputy CIO of
State Administration of Foreign Exchange and, later, the CIO at
CalPERS, where he created dedicated portfolios for private
credit and introduced active strategies in the portfolio.
