The Private Credit Retreat is designed to bring together 85 of the top minds in institutional and private wealth investment nationwide. This invitation only event is comprised of senior leadership such as chief investment officers and senior investment staff and will take place over the course of three days, featuring engaging content, networking events, award ceremonies, high-level management discussions, and opportunities to engage with top allocators. The retreat provides educational updates across all private credit investments including: Private Credit Allocation Trends, Global Macro Environment, Direct Lending, Distressed, Real Estate Debt, Special Situations, Opportunistic and Niche Credit, Infrastructure and Venture Debt.

Through a series of panel discussions, keynotes and interactive roundtables with industry leaders, institutional and private wealth allocators explore innovative alternative strategies and new approaches to portfolio construction. Additionally, attendees analyze the utility of private credit investments from the view of a modern investor’s portfolio.

Senior Investment Officer

As a member of the investment team, Amit Thanki is responsible for the development of investment goals, underwriting investments in private/public equity and debt, investment manager selection and oversight, and relationship with custodian bank. Prior to joining SBCERA, Mr. Thanki was an Investment Analyst at Orange County Employees’ Retirement System (OCERS) where he was responsible for the oversight of the hedge fund, public equity, and public fixed income portfolios. Mr. Thanki is a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) charter holder and a member of the CAIA Association.

Carol Schleif is the Chief Market Strategist for BMO Private Wealth, the North American Wealth Management Business of BMO Financial Group. In this role, Carol leads several key initiatives aimed at amplifying BMOPW’s research and investment expertise, including authoring the firm’s Weekly Strategy Perspectives. Decades in the industry as a strategist, thought leader and portfolio manager position Carol as a sought-after speaker, writer and media commentator. Carol is a member of key asset allocation, strategy and governance working groups from across the bank as well as leading the Senior Investment Advisory Council. Carol is an active member and contributor to BMO’s Women & Wealth group. Prior to her current role, Carol was the Chief Investment Officer for BMO Family Office, the Ultra High Net Worth money management group within BMO Private Wealth. As CIO, Carol led a team of 35 front line investment professionals, managed portfolios, and oversaw development and compliance activities for the team. Prior to BMO, Carol spent over 25 years in the HNW and UHNW space of Wells Fargo, managing portfolios and client relationships, leading teams and participating in research, strategy and portfolio construction. Prior to that, Carol spent a decade on the sell side as a Market Strategist, Senior Research Analyst and Director of Fundamental Research. Carol serves on the joint board of trustees for the College of St. Benedict & St. John’s University where she chairs CSB’s investment committee. She earned her MBA from Hamline University and undergraduate degrees in both business administration and equestrian science from William Woods College, where she graduated salutatorian and summa cum laude. She is a Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) and has also earned the Fundamentals of Sustainability Accounting (FSA).

Deputy Chief Investment Officer

Christina Wu is currently deputy chief investment officer at the Dallas Police and Fire Pension Fund. She rejoined the Fund from the Fort Worth Employees’ Retirement Fund where she oversaw private markets investments. Her institutional investment experience includes all asset classes with a focus on private markets investments.  Christina holds an MBA from Southern Methodist University, a MS from Texas A & M University, and a MS from Kansas State University. She is also a CAIA charter holder.

Head of North America Direct Lending Investment Due Diligence

Daniel currently leads the investment due diligence on North American direct lenders (both senior and junior) as well as certain opportunistic and asset-backed funds at Albourne. Prior to Albourne, Daniel previously worked at Garrison Investment Group for five years in Specialty Finance, managing existing platform investments as well as monitoring loan portfolios of consumer instalment loans, SFR whole loans and rental properties. He started his career in credit structuring after graduating from Princeton University.

Terry Monis is a Managing Director and voting member of the Investment Committee as well as the head of research and manager due diligence. Prior to joining ICG in 2010, Mr. Monis was a Vice President at Ivy Asset Management where he focused on portfolio management and oversight of the firm’s event driven and distressed debt research team. Mr. Monis is a graduate of Long Island University, C.W. Post (B.S., Business Administration, Finance, Management Information Systems) where he played offensive tackle and was captain of the football team.

Jason R. Safran was appointed the second chief investment officer (CIO) of Texas Christian University in December 2021 and is responsible for managing the university’s Endowment assets and short-term investment portfolios. Mr. Safran served in an interim CIO capacity for five months. Previously, he was the senior asset manager for TCU’s Endowment and had the responsibility for researching and evaluating investment opportunities across asset classes. He joined TCU’s endowment team in August 2012. Mr. Safran began his career as a research associate with John McStay Investment Counsel, an equity investment boutique. After business school, he joined Cimarron Asset Management, an institutional advisory firm specializing in the management of relative-value portfolios. Following a merger, he served as portfolio manager for Smith Asset Management, L.P. responsible for relative-value equity strategies. Prior to joining TCU, he was a senior investment analyst for Texas Capital Bank. Mr. Safran earned his MBA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2006 and his BBA in finance and minor in economics from TCU in 2001. Mr. Safran is a chartered financial analyst and serves on the strategic advisory board for the CFA Society of Dallas-Ft. Worth. He currently serves on the investment committee of Texas Health Resources.

Mark Strahs always has his mind on the market. As the son of an early stage institutional equity trader who happily spent his childhood vacations on trading desks, investment is in his veins. Mark brings over 27 years of financial markets experience together with a background in top-down, macro-economic analysis and a focus on stock fundamentals to his work as Sand Hill’s Co-Chief Investment Officer and Head of Equities, which includes responsibility for the firm’s Core Stock Portfolio.

As the Co-CIO, Mark has a sharp focus on methodical mindfulness in asset allocation. He views each client portfolio as a living, breathing entity that requires constant attention. Mark enjoys working as part of a team with an incredibly broad knowledge base and wide-ranging specialties to customize and continually reassess client portfolios. He loves delving into research and uses multi-factor tools to shape his views and decisions about companies or funds, including money flow, behavioral analytics and technical analysis. He specializes in working on concentrated holdings, balancing client sentiment with market timing to help with portfolio diversification. Mark has experience working with both domestic and international clients and brings this global view and dedication to his work at Sand Hill every day.

Prior to HC Financial Advisors, he was a Senior Analyst of Zacks Investment Research, Senior Equity Analyst of Manning & Napier, and Principal of Wells Capital Management. Stephen earned his MS in Business and Finance and BS in Business and Management from San Diego State University. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation, Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst® designation, and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional. Additionally, as Co-Director of Research, she also participates in all other areas of the portfolio.

Mr. Tim Barrett is Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Investment Officer for Texas Tech University System (TTUS). Mr. Barrett is responsible for day-to-day management of the Endowment Assets and responsible for Investment Strategy and Implementation of the nearly $1.2 Billion endowment and $800 Million in Operating Capital. Prior to TTUS, Mr. Barrett served as Director of Pension Investments Worldwide at Eastman Kodak, overseeing more than $16 Billion in aggregate through approximately 77 plans globally. Mr. Barrett began his career with San Bernardino County Employees’ Retirement Association (SBCERA) where he worked his way up the organization to become the Executive Director & Chief Investment Officer.
