Sarah Hunter has been named the Chief Economist and Assistant Governor (Economic) at the Reserve Bank of Australia. In her new role, Sarah will head the Bank’s Economic Group, which includes Economic Analysis and Economic Research.
Bringing a wealth of experience from academia, consulting, and public service, Sarah played a pivotal role in establishing the Americas, Asia Pacific, and Australian offices at Oxford Economics, ultimately rising to the position of Chief Economist in Sydney. She also served as a Partner at KPMG in the Economics and Tax Centre before joining the Commonwealth Treasury as the Head of Macroeconomic Conditions. In her current capacity at Treasury, she oversees the analysis of current conditions and economic forecasts, providing advice to the Government on a wide range of economic and policy matters. Sarah holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Economics) from the University of Oxford.
Governor Michele Bullock expressed her delight at Sarah’s appointment, noting that her unique and diverse perspective would be a valuable addition to the Bank and its leadership team.
Sarah will assume her new position on January 29, 2024.
